Skill Changes in the U.S. Economy over the 1980's

Abstract: The substantial growth in income inequality over the 1980's has led to a large number of alternative explanations. One of the key issues that has yet to be fully explored is the role of changing skill requirements in the U.S. economy. In this paper, we attempt to fill that gap by providing estimates of skill changes between 1979 and 1989. We also provide a decomposition of skills shifts based on changes in the functional content of occupations and in the industrial and occupational makeup of the economy.
