Abstract:
The organization of productive activity within firms has received increasing attention in recent years. Problems of motivation, productivity and "quality of working life" have become central concerns at both policy and academic levels (Hackman and Suttle, 1977). Co-determination and worker participation in management are now major issues in Europe and elsewhere. A number of economists including FitzRoy and Mueller (1977) have begun to study the contractual relationships and internal organization of the firm, while successful co-operative ventures at Mondragon and elsewhere (Oakeshott, 1978) provide counter examples to receive doctrines in this area.
