Price and Non-price Competition in Food Retailing: Constructing a balance

Abstract: The objective of this paper is to examine the transition from atomistic to oligoplistic competition within the grocery food retailing market and to locate this transition within a wider industrial economics and economic history. The focus of the paper is the period from the end of post-war rationing in 1954 to the passing of the Trading Stamps Act in 1964. The paper maintains that it is this decade that determined the future pattern of development within the grocery retailing market. The findings of the paper are then discussed in relation to debates over theories of the firm, British relative economic decline and contemporary competition policy.
