Education and Earnings Across Platform and Non-Platform Work: Evidence from Web-Based Platform Workers in Latin America and the Caribbean

EconStor Research Reports from ZBW - Leibniz Information Centre for Economics

Abstract: Digital labor platforms have expanded rapidly, reshaping labor markets and raising new questions about how education is associated with earnings across platform and non-platform work. Drawing on survey data from 905 web-based platform workers in Latin America and the Caribbean, this paper examines these relationships using standard Mincer earnings regressions. Each additional year of schooling is associated with approximately 3.8 percent higher hourly platform earnings, less than half the regional average reported for traditional labor markets. Nearly half of surveyed workers combine platform and non-platform jobs, and when both income sources are considered, estimated returns rise to levels consistent with regional benchmarks. These findings suggest that wider labor-market options may shape how education is translated into earnings and highlight the importance of examining platform work as part of workers’ broader employment and earnings portfolios.
