Abstract:
Organizations operate in increasingly volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous environments, making the systematic management of change essential for quality management systems. This paper examines the relationship between changes, risks and opportunities in the context of ISO 9001. It argues that changes in an organization's internal or external context are the common trigger for both risks and opportunities. While risks focus on potential negative impacts and are typically assessed through likelihood and consequence, opportunities require consideration of an organization's capability, capacity and competence. Linking risk-based and opportunity-based thinking therefore provides a holistic approach to decision-making, improvement and sustained organizational success.
