Abstract:
Time use surveys are a rich data source that can inform many disciplines. However, much of their potential remains untapped due to the complexities involved in manipulating these episode-level files. The timeuse package for Stata aims to make time use data more accessible. The key programs included in the package are timeuse, timeusex, sequence, and sequencex. timeuse and timeusex transform episode-level files into diary-level files containing time use information that can be immediately utilized by users without prior knowledge of time use data. timeuse provides durations and instances of participation for several activities, while timeusex offers more detailed information but for a single category of activity. sequence and sequencex create episode files where the episode of activity is defined by the variables or diary fields specified by the user. sequence should be used when the starting file is in calendar format, and sequencex when the starting file is already in episode format.
