Abstract: emlink assumes the comparison variables have already been normalized. The command does not clean strings for you. Accents, mixed case, digits and stray punctuation create artificial disagreements that the EM reads as evidence against a match, so normalization must happen first {bf:and must use identical rules in both files}. A file that keeps accents linked against one that strips them will link badly no matter how the model is specified.
