Abstract:
We measure the effects of a pension reform on health outcomes. We use the 1993 French pension reform, which has created heterogeneity in work incentives among seniors born between 1933 and 1943. Given that the reform concerned only private sector workers, we use a difference-in-differences analysis to compare health outcomes between sectors between cohorts. We use data from the 2005 wave of the Health Barometer survey conducted by the French National Public Health Agency. This survey contains information on the sector of activity of the respondents, information on their individual characteristics, health status indicators (Duke health profiles) measuring their perceived health, physical, mental health, as well as an indicator of their social life. The results show a negative effect of the 1993 reform on perceived and physical health, concentrated on less-educated individuals exclusively. JEL Codes: C010, I14, J14, J26.
