Abstract:
Within the scope of the project, „Future of refugees in rural areas in Germany,” determinants of the integration of refugees in rural areas are analysed to identify potential needs for policy action and to deduce policy recommendations. It is often said that rural areas are especially suited to integrating refugees because ample living spaces are available to house them at a local level. However, one drawback of this approach might be the local abundance or poor accessibility of important infrastructures of basic needs. In addition, dependent on the housing location, the access to these infrastructures might differ considerably within a county. This can have considerable consequences on the individual living conditions of the refugees. Therefore, the accessibility of infrastructures of basic needs with different means of transport like car, bicycle, foot or public transport is one of the central factors of integration. Against this background within the scope of the work package “Accessibility and Mobility” the accessibility of selected infrastructures of basic needs are examined within the eight project counties: Bautzen, Neustadt an der Aisch-Bad Windsheim, Nordsachsen, Northeim, Regen, Vechta, Waldeck-Frankenberg und Werra-Meißner-Kreis. The Thünen-Accessibility-Model is used to assess access data for the following means of transport: car, foot, bicycle and public transport The results are based on a 250 m x 250 m-analysis grid covering the project counties. The results of this analysis are presented in maps and statistical figures in the data-report at hand. In part I of the report the Thünen-Accessibility-Model is introduced, followed by considerations on the explanatory power and interpretation of the analysis results. Part I of the report closes with a summary on the accessibility of infrastructures of basic needs in the project counties. In part II of the report for the eight project counties and its communities the accessibility of selected infrastructures of basic needs are presented in detail in terms of maps and statistics.
