THE TRANSITION OF THE WINE INDUSTRY, POLICY AND TRADE IN EASTERN EUROPE AND THE FORMER SOVIET UNION

Nivelin Noev and Johan Swinnen

No 31871, PRG Working Papers from Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, LICOS - Centre for Institutions and Economic Performance

Abstract: In the transition economies of central and eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, economic and institutional reforms had important impacts on wine production, consumption, prices, and policies. The paper discusses the transition changes in wine consumption and production, and how reforms have affected them. It analyzes the restructuring of the production system and the wine chain and the impacts of the changes on wine trade, and discusses the policy changes and the expected effects of integration of the central European countries into the EU, the so-called "Eastern EU enlargement".
