Abstract:
Globalization has accelerated since the 1980s and has created a signi cant impact in various elds, includinghigher education. Globalization has connected nations around the world closer through removing barrier of trade.Vietnam could not be an exception from this trend. After many years of implementing the centralized economy underSoviet in uence, in 1986, Vietnam adopted the Open door policy or in other word - Reform policy which replaced thecentralized economy with the market-oriented economy. This shift provided an important backdrop to the reconstructionof the economy. Since then, the economy is growing dramatically and Vietnamese's living standard is increasing. However, the economy relies largely on the cheap and low-skilled labor and natural resources exploitation. In this paper, the impactof globalization on higher education in Vietnam will be illustrated. This paper reviews literature of scholars about thehigher education reform in Vietnam to gure out how globalization a ects the change in Vietnamese higher educationpolicies and practices. The Vietnam higher education system began privatized and internationalized as a part of thehigher education reforms. The process of internationalization of higher education will be discussed. The author pointsout that Vietnam needs to enhance the education quality to improve the competitiveness in the Asia-Paci c region. Thecurricula need to be updated, the capacity of research and development needs to be increased, and higher educationinstitutions should be given more autonomy freedom. Thus, the quality of the human resource will be improved and thecountry can achieve the target in modernization of the nation.
