Navigating Theory and Practice: The EU Competition Policy in a Changing Landscape

Eduard Marinov

Economic Studies journal, 2024, issue 8, 190-211

Abstract: The article scrutinizes the dynamic interplay between theory and practice in EU competition policy. Through an in-depth analysis of theoretical and empirical insights, the article evaluates the impact of antitrust measures, merger control, and sector-specific regulations on EU flagship initiatives and economic growth. Emphasizing the pivotal role of competition policy in the single market, it calls for heightened theoretical underpinnings to enhance policy efficacy. As the article unfolds against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, it underscores the policy's adaptability to new strategic priorities, advocating for innovation, resilience, and sustainable development. The analysis reveals that while the European Union's competition policy has contributed to market efficiency and economic growth, challenges persist, particularly in addressing weak competition in certain sectors and adapting to evolving global economic dynamics.
