Skill relatedness, structural change and heterogeneous regions: evidence from a developing country

Abstract: We employ a detailed skill database from Brazil to investigate how skill relatedness influences structural change in a developing country. We find a positive relationship between the skill‐relatedness density and the entry of skill‐related industries; a negative association with the exit of industries from regional economies; and a positive influence on employment growth. The relationship between skill relatedness and structural change varies across different regions. Entry is more likely in large regions, and depends less on relatedness in advanced and middle‐income regions. Skill relatedness plays a role in preventing exit from small regions and enhancing employment growth in larger regions. En este artículo se empleó una detallada base de datos de los conocimientos especializados de Brasil para investigar cómo la relación entre los conocimientos especializados influye en el cambio estructural en un país en desarrollo. Se encontró una relación positiva entre la densidad del grado de relación entre conocimientos especializados y la aparición de industrias con conocimientos especializados relacionados, una asociación negativa con la desaparición de industrias de las economías regionales, y una influencia positiva en el crecimiento del empleo. La relación entre el grado de relación entre conocimientos especializados y el cambio estructural varía según las regiones. La aparición es más probable en las regiones grandes y depende menos del grado de relación en las regiones avanzadas y de renta media. El grado de relación entre conocimientos especializados desempeña un papel en cuanto a prevenir la desaparición de las regiones pequeñas y en mejorar el crecimiento del empleo en las regiones más grandes. 本稿では、ブラジルの詳細なスキルデータベースを用いて、スキル関連性(スキルが関連していること:skill relatedness)が開発途上国の構造変化にどのように影響するかを検討する。スキル関連性の密度は、スキル関連産業の参入との間には正の関連性があり、産業の地域経済からの撤退との間には負の関連性があり、雇用の拡大にはプラスの影響を与えていることが分かった。スキル関連性と構造変化との関連性は地域によって異なっている。新規参入は、大規模地域ではその可能性が高いが、先進地域と中所得地域では関連性への依存度は低い。スキル関連性は、小規模地域からの撤退を防ぎ、大規模地域での雇用拡大を促進するのに一翼を担っている。
