The effect of cultural and creative production on human capital: Evidence from European regions

Abstract: Cultural and creative production (CCP) can create, renovate, and shape places' socio‐economic environments. Recent contributions suggest that culture can activate a set of cognitive and productive mechanisms that form the basis of human capital (HC) dynamics. Bridging these two streams of research, the present paper investigates possible causal relationships between CCP and HC at the regional level. Empirically, we used measures of employment in the cultural and creative sectors as proxies for CCP and applied generalized method of moments (GMM) panel estimations to yearly data from 283 European NUTS 2 regions from 2014 to 2020. The findings suggest that CCP positively affects regions' average levels of HC even controlling for several economic and demographic factors. La producción cultural y creativa (PCC) puede crear, renovar y dar forma a los entornos socioeconómicos de los lugares. Algunas contribuciones recientes sugieren que la cultura puede activar un conjunto de mecanismos cognitivos y productivos que constituyen la base de la dinámica del capital humano (CH). Tendiendo un puente entre estas dos corrientes de investigación, este artículo investiga las posibles relaciones causales entre la PCC y el CH a nivel regional. Empíricamente, se utilizaron medidas del empleo en los sectores cultural y creativo como indicadores sustitutivos de la PCC y se hicieron estimaciones de panel del Método de los Momentos Generalizado (MMG) con datos anuales de 283 regiones europeas NUTS 2 desde 2014 a 2020. Los resultados sugieren que la PCC afecta positivamente a los niveles promedio del CH de las regiones, incluso después de controlar varios factores económicos y demográficos. 文化的及び創造的生産(Cultural and creative production:CCP)は、場所における社会経済的環境を創造し、刷新し、形成することができる。最近の研究から、文化が人的資本の動態の基礎を形成する一連の認知的及び生産的メカニズムを活性化することが示唆されている。この2つの研究の流れを合わせて、CCPと人的資本に因果関係が存在し得るか地域レベルで調査した。実証研究として、文化的および創造的セクターの雇用の規模をCCPの代理として使用し、2014~2020年までの283のヨーロッパNUTS2地域の年間データを用いて一般化モーメント法によるパネルデータ推定を実施した。この結果から、経済的および人口統計的因子を調整しても、CCPが地域の人的資本の平均レベルにプラスの影響を与えていることが示唆される。
