Explaining COVID‐19 vaccine uptake: A spatial sociodemographic study in Turkey

Abstract: COVID‐19 vaccines have so far been the most powerful weapon in the current pandemic, yet many people still show hesitancy towards them. This paper is one of the first studies that examine the factors affecting the COVID‐19 vaccine uptake decision from a spatial perspective in Turkey. The study setting allows us to specify the spatial effects that are influential in this decision without which the true nature of the association between vaccination rates and various socio‐economic factors can be determined. Our findings reveal the existence of global spatial interactions in vaccination rates. In addition, age, the level of conservatism, and low education levels show spillovers that amplify their total effects on vaccination rates. Aunque las vacunas de COVID‐19 han sido hasta ahora el arma más poderosa en la pandemia actual, mucha gente sigue mostrando reticencia. Este artículo es uno de los primeros estudios que examinan los factores que afectan a la decisión de adopción de la vacuna de COVID‐19 desde una perspectiva espacial en Turquía. El marco del estudio permite especificar los efectos espaciales que influyen en esta decisión, sin lo cual se puede determinar la verdadera naturaleza de la asociación entre las tasas de vacunación y los diversos factores socioeconómicos. Los resultados revelan la existencia de interacciones espaciales globales en las tasas de vacunación. Además, la edad, el nivel de conservadurismo y el bajo nivel educativo muestran spillovers que amplifican sus efectos totales sobre las tasas de vacunación. 新型コロナウイルス感染症のワクチンはこれまでのところ、今回のパンデミックにおいて最も強力な武器となっているが、いまだに多くの人々がワクチンの接種を躊躇している。本稿は、新型コロナワクチン接種の決定に影響を与える要因を空間的な視点から検討した、トルコにおける最初の研究の一つである。この決定に影響を与える空間的影響を特定することができる研究セッティングであるが、この空間的影響がないと、ワクチン接種率と様々な社会経済的要因との関連性の真の性質を特定することができる。今回の知見はワクチン接種率におけるグローバルな空間的相互作用の存在を明らかにするものである。さらに、年齢、保守性のレベル、教育水準の低さが、ワクチン接種率に対する全体的な影響を増幅する波及効果を示している。
