When R&D matters for regional growth: A tripod approach

Abstract: Abstract In modern economic growth theory, R&D and the subsequent production of new knowledge are the driving forces for long‐term regional growth. Empirical evidence, however, does not always support this popular belief in the regional context. Using a simple growth accounting model, this study examines the role of R&D in regional growth. Estimation results from the proposed models show that knowledge commercialization and retention factors, such as entrepreneurship, university research, human capital, social capital, and industry structure, play significant roles in the regional R&D appropriation mechanism. Findings from this study suggest that R&D policy needs to be designed to take into account other regional factors. Resumen Dentro de la teoría de crecimiento económico moderna, I+D y la subsiguiente producción de nuevo conocimiento son las fuerzas impulsoras del crecimiento regional a largo plazo. Las pruebas empíricas, sin embargo, no siempre respaldan esta creencia popular dentro de un contexto regional. Utilizando un modelo contable sencillo de crecimiento, este estudio examina el papel de I+D en el crecimiento regional. Las estimaciones resultantes de los modelos propuestos muestran que la comercialización del conocimiento y los factores de retención tales como el espíritu empresarial, la investigación de las universidades, los capitales humano y social, y la estructura industrial, juegan papeles significativos en el mecanismo de apropiación de I+D regional. Los hallazgos de este estudio sugieren que la política de I+D tiene que ser diseñada de manera que tenga en cuenta otros factores regionales.
