Well‐being in European regions: Does government quality matter?

Abstract: This paper constructs a composite indicator of well‐being for 168 European regions with data from 10 well‐being domains. Regions are then ranked according to their respective levels of well‐being. The ranking reveals notable differences across European regions, which follow a marked spatial pattern. As a second contribution, the paper analyses the impact of the quality of government on well‐being. Results show a positive association robust to several specifications and scenarios. Moreover, the effects of quality of government on individual well‐being dimensions are identified, finding positive links with education, jobs, income, safety civic engagement, access to services, housing and community support. Este artículo desarrolla un indicador compuesto de bienestar para 168 regiones europeas con datos de 10 áreas de bienestar. Las regiones se clasifican a continuación según sus respectivos niveles de bienestar. La clasificación revela diferencias notables entre las regiones europeas, que siguen un marcado patrón espacial. Como segundo aporte, el artículo analiza el impacto de la calidad del gobierno en el bienestar. Los resultados muestran una asociación positiva robusta respecto a varias especificaciones y escenarios. Además, se identifican los efectos de la calidad del gobierno en las áreas del bienestar individual, y se encuentran vínculos positivos con la educación, el empleo, los ingresos, la seguridad, la participación cívica, el acceso a los servicios, la vivienda y el apoyo de la comunidad. 本稿では、福祉の10の領域のデータを用いて、欧州の168の地域のための福祉の複合指標を作成し、それぞれの福祉のレベルによって地域のランク付けを行う。ランク付けの結果から、欧州の地域全体に顕著な差があることが明らかになった。本稿のもう一つの課題として、政府の質が福祉に及ぼす影響を分析する。結果から、いくつかの特徴とシナリオに対する頑健な正の関連が示される。さらに、政府の質の福祉の各側面に対する影響が特定され、教育、就労、所得、市民参画の安全性、サービスの利用可能性、住宅、コミュニティ支援との正の関連が認められた。
