The role of economic and cultural changes in the rise of far‐right in Greece: A regional analysis

Abstract: The recent strengthening of right‐wing and far‐right populism is one of the greatest political manifestations of our times and a dominant feature of the current European political landscape. In Greece, its rise coincided with a period of a prolonged financial aid programme (“bailouts”) imposing harsh austerity measures and deep structural reforms. The objective of this study is to assess the extent to which the spatially differentiated gains of Golden Dawn, one of the most anti‐establishment, anti‐migrant and anti‐EU political parties in Europe, were due to (socio‐)economic or cultural changes (or both) that took place in the country in recent years. The findings provide evidence in favour of the combined role of (socio‐)economic and cultural grievances; however, the former seem to be more important than the latter. El reciente fortalecimiento del populismo de derecha y extrema derecha es una de las principales manifestaciones políticas de nuestro tiempo y una característica dominante del panorama político europeo actual. En Grecia, su ascenso coincidió con un período de un prolongado programa de ayuda financiera (“rescates”) que impuso duras medidas de austeridad y profundas reformas estructurales. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar hasta qué punto la popularidad espacialmente diferenciada de Amanecer Dorado, uno de los partidos políticos de Europa más antisistema, antiinmigrantes y opuestos a la UE, se debieron a los cambios (socio)económicos o culturales (o ambos) que tuvieron lugar en el país en los últimos años. Los resultados proporcionan pruebas a favor del papel combinado de los agravios (socio)económicos y culturales; sin embargo, los primeros parecen ser más importantes que los segundos. 最近の右翼と極右ポピュリズムの強化は、現代の最大の政治的兆候の1つであり、現在のヨーロッパの政治情勢の大きな特徴である。ギリシャでは、厳しい緊縮財政と抜本的な構造改革が課された長期の財政援助計画 (ベイルアウト)の時期に一致して右翼と極右ポピュリズムが台頭した。本研究の目的は、ヨーロッパで最も反体制、反移民、反EU政党の1つであるGolden Dawn (黄金の夜明け団)が、近年この国で起こった経済的 (社会経済的)または文化的変化 (あるいはその両方)によって、空間的に差別化された利益をどの程度得たかを評価することである。この知見から、経済的 (社会経済的)及び文化的な不満の複合的役割を支持するエビデンスが得られる。ただし、前者のほうが後者よりも大きい問題のようである。
