Abstract: Under the impression of the last financial crisis, the European Commission developed a variety of measures to ensure financial stability and economic prosperity within the European Union – the so-called Banking Union in 2014 and the Capital Markets Union in 2015. Nevertheless, the particular strategies applied neglect peculiarities of national financial systems and hence hamper the intended integration. Initially, this paper will give a brief overview of the status quo of both, the banking market and the corporate structure in Germany. Afterwards we sketch possible impacts of the Capital Markets and Banking Union on the German banking sector and the entire process of European Integration. Finally, we derive possible alternatives and recommend rather sticking to the roots of European ideas.
