Abstract:
Supporters of Donald Trump‘s presidency, of Brexit, and of populist parties are not so much driven by material concerns, fundamental opposition against international free trade, or a strong xenophobic sentiment. To a larger extent than others their vote is influenced by feelings of political inefficacy, discontent with the ongoing cultural change in society, and concern over hitherto unknown migration dynamics. How should established parties respond to them without copying the economic populism of the challenger parties? How can a deepening of this societal cleavage be avoided? Our contribution shows that there is no need for inventing new political concepts, for creating new redistributive measures, or for protectionism. Instead, time-tested ordoliberal concepts provide a convincing answer also to voters who express a critical attitude towards elites and immigration. Ordoliberalism can therefore contribute to bridge the divisions within society.
