Abstract:
What is meant by the term overtourism? Which dimensions, indicators and criteria are relevant to describe adequately this touristic phenomenon? At first glance, these questions may reflect a very theoretical approach, but they are nevertheless of enormous practical importance for the future of tourism, since an in-depth understanding of the concept of overtourism is essential for both theory and practice, in order to be able to confront the relevant challenges for the tourism industry. Hence, against the backdrop of socio-economic conflicts in the tension between acceptance and aversion in tourist destinations, it is necessary to investigate the multifaceted effects and impacts of overtourism on all stakeholders involved and to develop appropriate measures and recommendations for action. In the course of a descriptive-explorative approach and the presentation of a case study, this article is intended to provide more clarity about the phenomenology of overtourism and the associated research perspectives in the current discourse.
