Abstract: Regarding their institutional structure, German cooperatives are bonded to the cooperative legislation (Genossenschaftsgesetz, cooperative law). This implies certain cooperative core values, which are neither time-dependent nor subject to the disposition of institutions. On the other hand, other elements of the value system may evolve over time. Therefore, it is the purpose of this paper to distinguish between “relevant” core values and “adaptable” principles.
