Carafe ou bouteille ?. Le rôle de la qualité de l'environnement dans la décision du consommateur

Christophe Bontemps and Celine Nauges

Economie & Prévision, 2009, vol. n° 188, issue 2, 61-79

Abstract: The authors use an econometric study to measure the impact of environmental, socio-economic, and cultural factors onconsumers? decisions to drink tap water or not. Our approach features two novel aspects : (1) the use ofhousehold-consumption data combined with information on environmental quality ? particularly the quality of raw water? in the households? localities of residence ; (2) the use of water-potabilization costs as an indicator of the ?poor quality? ofraw water. Estimating a Probit model on a sample of 4,623 households, we show that the ?poor quality? of raw water is asubstantial determinant of the decision to drink or avoid tap water. Our study also confirms the significant role ofhousehold characteristics and regional effects. Lastly, our results suggest no decisive impact of the form of water-servicemanagement (public/private) on consumer choice.
