Abstract: «Sustainable development» is a term that was created by international institutions twenty years ago to qualify the third «decade of development». This phrase has had a real success, so much that a large number of actors use it. At the same time, questions about its real meaning still remain. In this paper, we propose a sort of archaeological perspective on this concept, in the domain of economic analysis, and we demonstrate that shows that «sustainable development» has inherited different schools of thought. No surprise then that this concept is ambivalent. Indeed, if it has the characteristics of a compromise solution, the question now is how to organize the debate between these different conceptions of sustainable development.
