Jean-Christophe Dissart

Revue d'économie régionale et urbaine, 2005, vol. avril, issue 2, 217-248

Abstract: As amenity-rich rural areas experience higher levels of growth, this research addressed the question of the extent to which outdoor recreation facilities impact selected economic development indicators in U.S. remote rural counties. The research first clustered counties according to natural resource endowments. Then, three regression models were specified for each cluster : change in the GINI coefficient, in the poverty rate, and in household income, over the 1989-99 period. Results indicated a limited relationship between outdoor recreation facilities and economic development, but the relationship did vary on a regional basis. The main policy implication was that planners should not overstate the importance of recreation facilities to economic Classification JEL : R11, R12, R14.
