Capital social et performance économique. Un test économétrique sur l'espace rural français

Abstract:
This article first presents a classification of the mechanisms by which sociological characteristics may influence economic development. From this framework, we deduce the necessity of distinguishing two forms of social capital : local cohesion (or bonding social capital) and outer links (bridging social capital). Indicators of these two forms of social capital are proposed, and synthetic indices are built, in the case of French rural areas. Last, econometric estimations test the impact of social capital on economic growth in French rural areas. Results suggest a positive and robust impact of both forms of social capital.
