L'avancée fulgurante du complexe soja dans le Mato Grosso: facteurs clés et limites prévisibles

Revue Tiers-Monde, 2004, vol. n° 179, issue 3, 567-594
Abstract:
The boom of the soybean complex in the Mato Grosso can be explained by a number of favourable factors : a sustained international demand for oil and high protein products, the establishment of a competitive production model owed to the adaptation of soybean varieties to local conditions, public and private policies (federal, regional and local) concentrating on transport infrastructures. The agronomic and economic viability of the capital intensive agricultural model developed around the soybean remains uncertain due to the notable difficulties of transport and to environmental conservation, which is hardly taken into account.
