The Economic Effects of Waiting to Stabilize Federal Debt
Congressional Budget Office
No 57867, Reports from Congressional Budget Office
Abstract:
CBO analyzed the economic effects of waiting to stabilize federal debt using two simplified policy options—one that would raise federal income tax rates and one that would cut spending for certain government benefit programs. The longer policy action was delayed, the larger the policy changes needed to stabilize the debt would be. The timing and type of policy would determine its effects on the economic well-being of people of different generations and in different income groups.
