BR Documentation: Constructing SSEL files from the BR

Javier Miranda

CES Technical Notes Series from Center for Economic Studies, U.S. Census Bureau

Abstract: SSEL files and processing systems have been completely redesigned to generate a new set of BR tables or files. The new systems allow for the retention of an increased number of data elements that were previously lost. As a result of this restructuring process the new BR is radically different from what we are used to. The old SSEL was primarily structured around the SU or MU status of the enterprise captured in the register. The SSEL included a SU file, a MU file and a Master file. Each file contained a combination of administrative and survey data. The new BR contains all the data elements of the SSEL files and more. It is however structured around the source of the data. The BR include separate Survey, EIN and establishment files. Each contains a mix of single-unit establishments, multiunit establishments as well as alternative reporting entities.
