Abstract: •The correlation between tourism and High Speed Rail system in Europe is explored.•The HSR network has been expanding in the European Union for three decades.•Lower levels of Gross Domestic Product and hospitality prices attract more tourism.•HSR is more correlate with domestic tourism and air transport with foreign tourism in Europe.•A complementary effect between both transportation modes to boost tourism development.
