•Blockchain and cryptocurrencies has been recognized by the financial sector.•Their impact on finance will flow on to the tourism industry.•The aim of this note is to start an academic discussion on blockchain and tourism.•Three high-level propositions are presented.•They are intended to be further refined and elaborated by the research community.
