Abstract:
•Japan saw a remarkable increase in tourism flows in the last decade.•An exploratory spatial analysis allowed us to identify tourism clusters.•The two spatial panel models found positive tourist and economic spillovers effects.•Neighboring tourists heighten the economic growth of Japanese prefectures.•Infrastructure and natural parks reinforce tourism spillovers between prefectures.
