Abstract: With the development of on-board proton exchange membrane fuel cells and their commercial applications, the performance and durability of on-board proton exchange membrane fuel cells are increasingly demanding. The existing laboratory-based offline electrochemical diagnosis of proton exchange membrane fuel cells cannot fully meet the online diagnosis requirements of on-board proton exchange membrane fuel cells. The development and application of on-board diagnostic methods are very important and necessary to improve the performance and durability of proton exchange membrane fuel cells. This review compares the common electrochemical diagnostic methods of on-board proton exchange membrane fuel cells and establishes a demand framework for online electrochemical diagnosis of on-board proton exchange membrane fuel cell stacks. Through the combination of the above two aspects, the purpose of this article is to study the most suitable electrochemical diagnostic method for on-line diagnosis of on-board proton exchange membrane fuel cell stacks. The results show that optimized electrochemical impedance spectroscopy based on dynamic multi-frequency analysis might be the most suitable diagnostic method for online diagnosis of on-board proton exchange membrane fuel cells tacks. Future developments of the method are prospected in order to achieve better diagnostic performance.
