A novel approach for hydropower generation using photovoltaic electricity as driving energy

Abstract: A novel scheme for hydropower generation using photovoltaic electricity as primary energy for driving the system is proposed in this paper. However, the system needs no diversion of river water, dam construction and rehabilitation as required in a normal hydropower plant. Location of installing the present system is a lake or river, which is nearby a hill or mountain having sufficient quantity of water throughout the year. The proposed system is a good option for an isolated microgrid for supplying clean energy to the localities of rural and remote areas, where electricity is still not accessible. However, the system exhibits good potential for integration with national grid also. A novel operational methodology is developed in the proposed system using the randomized, volatile and intermittent solar photovoltaic electricity for smooth, stable and uninterrupted hydroelectricity generation that remains absolutely unaffected by the fluctuations, changes and absence of solar irradiation. Also, the strategy developed enables the system to maintain its continuous operation throughout the day and night. The proposed system is simple, reliable and capable to continue normal operation even in rainy days also. Performance evaluation and economic analysis are carried out by way of a case study for generating 250 kW power using real solar irradiation data. Results obtained from simulation performed in MATLAB show the power generated at rated load is 250.05 kW at 400.04 V, which perfectly match with designed values of 250 kW and 400 V respectively. Levelized cost of electricity generation computed is 0. 0273 US$/kWh.
