Bifurcation and phase transitions in car-following model integrating driver's characteristic and speed limit on spiral slope roads

Abstract: Spiral slope roads often appear in some cities, such as the mountain city of Chongqing, China. Consequently, we integrate the driver's characteristics and speed limit effect into car-following model on spiral slope roads. By performing bifurcation analysis, the Hopf bifurcation critical condition and neutral stability condition are inferred. Also, the mKdV equation around the critical point of the neutral stability curve is derived by utilizing nonlinear analysis. Furthermore, numerical simulations are performed to validate the theoretical analysis results. The results demonstrate that integrating the timid driving behavior as well as the speed limit effect is beneficial to the improvement of traffic stability on spiral slope roads. However, both the aggressive driving characteristics and the increased radius and downhill slope angle will reduce the traffic flow stability on the spiral slope road.
