Impact of availability of grandparents’ care on birth in working women: An empirical analysis based on data of Chinese dynamic labour force

Hejun Gu, Fengqin Bian and Ehsan Elahi

Children and Youth Services Review, 2021, vol. 121, issue C

Abstract: The study explores the case of China, namely, the impact of the availability of grandparents on taking care of young children and its impact on the fertility of working women. The data were collected from 2012 to 2016 by referring to China Labour Force Dynamics Survey. The results reveal that the availability of grandparents’ care positively affected the fertility of working women and that the care from maternal grandparents had a more positive effect on the household’s economic situation than that of the paternal grandparents. The implementation of the two-child policy positively affected women’s fertility and labour force participation. The study results stress that implementing social childcare services at the public level is necessary.
