Afforestation and avoided deforestation in a multi-regional integrated assessment model

Abstract: A model is developed to estimate the potential role, and spatial allocation, of afforestation and avoided deforestation in climate policy. The model extends the RICE-2010 model, a multi-regional integrated assessment model of the climate and the economy. Incorporating these forest strategies in global climate policy is important, especially under stringent temperature targets. Under a 2°C temperature target, emission reductions from avoided deforestation quickly achieve their full potential, whereas afforestation is capable of substantially reducing emissions in both the medium and long run. The analysis shows that the most significant reductions in emissions from avoided deforestation and afforestation can be achieved by focusing policy efforts on tropical forests.
