Abstract:
•We question whether the idea of intermediate ecosystem services is useful.•We suggest an alternative perspective based on the idea of ecosystem function.•Ecosystem functions are the structures and processes that give rise to services.•The new perspective links to emerging concepts of ecosystem condition and capacity.•The term intermediate service should be restricted to its use in accounting.
