Abstract: In this paper, the effects of carbon dioxide on the upper flammability limits of oxy-methane were investigated. Firstly, the upper flammability limits of oxy-methane were measured under normal pressure and temperature. Then, the chemical effect of CO2 on the upper flammability was studied using the kinetic simulation. Finally, the thermal and radiative effects of CO2 on the upper flammability limits were discussed using energy balance analysis. The experimental upper flammability limits of CH4/O2/CO2 are from 9.5% to 33.25% in the condition of increasing oxygen concentrations from 15% to 50%. The analysis shows that the upper flammability limits of methane are mainly determined by the thermal property of CO2 and not significantly changed by the chemical and radiative effects.
