What affects residents’ behavioral intentions to ban gasoline vehicles? Evidence from an emerging economy

Abstract: Many countries have clearly proposed a timetable for banning gasoline vehicles to achieve sustainable development of transportation industry. China, the largest emerging economy, is used as an example to explore the public's behavioral intention to bangasoline vehicles. According to the relevant literatures, this paper designs a questionnaire with TPB and ABC as a theoretical framework, which mainly includes four kind of primary variables: psychological factors, environmental concerns and experiences, social factors and product factors. Principal component analysis, Bayes regularization BP neural network, sensitivity analysis and hierarchical linear regression are used to analyze data from 476 valid questionnaires, the results show that psychological factors and social norms have the greatest impact on residents' policy support intentions, what's more, strengthening promotion of the policy and improving subsidies of new energy vehicles could also improve policy acceptance. However, the price of related products such as public transportation and automobile fuel has very little impact on residents' voluntary rejection of fuel vehicles. The results provide a theoretical reference for other countries to promote the policy of banning gasoline vehicles.
