Influence of areca nut husk nano-additive on combustion, performance, and emission characteristics of compression ignition engine fuelled with plastic-grocery-bag derived oil-water-diesel emulsion

Abstract: Depleting fossil fuel reserves, rising fuel prices, and emissions from compression ignition (CI) engines have been emerging concerns in recent years. In this regard, the applications of bio-additives and water-emulsified fuels in CI engines are getting attention. Another major issue of this current era is waste generation from plastic-grocery-bag (PGB). Given the above scenario, this study is a first-of-a-kind investigation into the effects of areca nut husk (ANH) nano-additive on the emission, combustion, and performance parameters of CI engine, fuelled with a blend of PGB-derived oil-water-diesel emulsion (D10EPO). The ANH nano-additives were mixed at concentrations of 5, 10, and 15 ppm (D10EPO-5 ppm, D10EPO-10 ppm, D10EPO-15 ppm). The peak heat release rate and in-cylinder pressure increased with the incorporation of ANH. The brake-specific fuel consumption decreased by a maximum of 9.1% compared with D10EPO. Though nitrogen oxide emission increased marginally, all the ANH-dosed blends showed reductions in other emissions significantly at all loads, and the most promising blend was D10EPO-15 ppm. At full load, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon, and smoke emissions for D10EPO-15 ppm were reduced by 17.9, 14.7, and 17.6%, respectively, compared with D10EPO. The overall results reveal that ANH can be a suitable additive for the D10EPO-run CI engine.
