Analyzing the performance of electricity, heating, and cooling supply nexus in a hybrid energy system of airport under uncertainty

Energy, 2023, vol. 272, issue C

Abstract: Airports’ hybrid energy systems (HESs), combined with multiple forms of energy and various facilities, have become considerably complicated for managers. This study develops a hybrid fuzzy-stochastic programming (HFSP) method that improves upon conventional fuzzy-stochastic programming for handling fuzzy, random, and joint probabilities as well as the risk of constraint violation. Subsequently, the HFSP-HES model is formulated for Changsha airport, in which different scenarios are designed to analyze the performance of the electricity, heating, and cooling supply nexus and to optimize the combination of technologies. The results reveal that electricity price has a significant influence on HES performance, and the percentage of electricity supply from the grid decreases from 86.2% (in valley hours) to 48.0% (in peak hours). The HES is more sensitive to the variation in cooling load than to the variation in heating and electricity loads. The constraint violation risk of electricity supply has a negative effect on heating supply and a positive effect on cooling supply. Moreover, the practicability and reliability of the model are tested by performing a sensitivity analysis and method comparison. This study provides a practical decision-making model for identifying the desired investment and technological combination for HESs under uncertainty, which can enrich the theoretical research and application fields of HESs and optimization methods.
