Effect of water/acetic acid washing pretreatment on biomass chemical looping gasification (BCLG) using cost-effective oxygen carrier from iron-rich sludge ash

Abstract:
The effects of water/acetic acid washing pretreatments on biomass chemical looping gasification (BCLG) of pine wood sawdust (PWS) using cost-effective oxygen carrier of iron-rich sludge ash (SA) were investigated by thermodynamic analysis and sliding furnace tests. The thermodynamic analysis results showed that the equilibrium gas contents boosted as the washing medium changed from water to acetic acid solution. The BCLG tests indicated that the syngas products had certain increase when the washing pretreatments performed, the CO and H2 contents were increased, but the CO2 content was decreased. The values of cold gas efficiency (CGE) were 36.88%, 69.42%, 66.20%, and 60.66% for different PWS samples, respectively. The transient evolutions of syngas products revealed that the release peaks for various components appeared at the time of 10.0–15.0 min, and clearly affected by the pretreating measures. As the temperature increased from 700.0 to 900.0 °C, the carbon conversion efficiency and CGE values respectively increased from 39.6% to 89.1%, and 49.7%–90.1%. As the SA ratio increased, the syngas yield increased, but the lower heating value of syngas and the CO content roughly had a trend of first decrease and then increase.
