Study on the low-carbon development under a resources-dependent framework of water-land -energy utilization: Evidence from the Yellow River Basin, China

Abstract:
Water, land and energy (WLE) are not only key elements of ecological system, but also important sources for regional climate change. However, it is unclear whether resources gross or efficiency is the essential driver for low-carbon development (LCD) and how much potentialities WLE efficiency has in supporting LCD. Previous studies have paid less attention to the combined utilization of WLE and the impact of WLE on LCD. Here, we constructed a resources-dependent framework between WLE and LCD using non-collinear index system and multiple linear regression. Yellow River Basin (YRB), the second longest river in China, also known as the energy basin, were selected as a case. Results revealed that contribution of WLE efficiency to LCD in the primary industry was much weaker than that in the secondary and tertiary industry. Enhancement of water efficiency contributed more to the WLE efficiency than land and energy. Different provinces in the YRB had different ideal resources-dependent potentialities (only 1 province transcended 50%, 4 provinces surpassed 40%, 6 provinces exceeded 30%, and the other 2 reached less than 30%). Thus, the YRB should improve the resources-dependent pattern of LCD, especially to improve resources efficiency, which informs the synergy of resources utilization and climate protection.
