Does capital bring health? Evidence from family capital and older people

Xia Hai and Qiang Wang

Finance Research Letters, 2024, vol. 62, issue PB

Abstract: Family capital is a key resource that affects older people's health (OPH) in many ways. This study introduces family capital and comprehensively explores its impact on OPH. A regression analysis of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study survey data for 17,700 older people found that all dimensions of family capital (economic, cultural, political, and social) can significantly promote OPH, with family economic capital having the greatest influence. Therefore, family members can effectively contribute to China's healthy aging process by creating harmonious family atmospheres, strengthening family cohesion construction, and providing support to older families.
