Abstract: •Changes in U.S. forest ownerships have implications for ecosystem services.•We develop a theoretical model for ownership change and an empirical application.•Using USDA FIA data, we describe changes in corporate and family ownerships.•Time affects family ownerships and time and site attributes affect corporate owners.•This study serves as a starting point for future endeavors.
