Abstract: •State medical aid was created in france in 2000.•It guarantees free access to healthcare for undocumented migrants.•It has improved their access to health care and contributed to the preservation of public health.•Politically presented as a factor of france's attractiveness, it is under political threat.•There is no scientific data to support this association with migratory flows.
