Carbon-adjusted efficiency and technology gaps in gold mining

Abstract: •Significant disparities in efficiency exist between mines and across countries.•There is further variation in the efficiency ranking of mines when CO2 emissions are accounted for in production activities.•The technology gap appears to be higher for mines operating underground than mines using open-pit methods.•Improved technology and effective management of mines operating systems could help mitigate carbon emissions with increased efficiency.
