Abstract: To study the impact of the acceleration with memory on stabilization of traffic flow and vehicle’s fuel consumption, an improved car-following model is proposed. The control theory is applied to analysis of the stability condition. Theoretical analysis coincides with numerical simulation results. Numerical results indicate that acceleration with memory plays the positive influence on stability of traffic flow. Subsequently, memory effects are taken into account, an improved Virginia Tech microscopic model is proposed. It is used to explore the effective in reducing fuel consumption of vehicles. Numerical results manifest that vehicle’s fuel consumption can obtain preferable control with consideration of ensuring memory step. We can see that the effect of acceleration with memory can gradually dissipate traffic congestion and reduce energy consumption.
