Modeling and analysis of industrial IoT reliability to cascade failures: An information-service coupling perspective

Abstract: In Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), the intelligent production unit is both the information sender and the service provider. While this dual role gives the whole system high flexibility, it also makes the whole network system more vulnerable to cascade failures than general IoT. In this study, in order to reasonably characterize the cascade failure process of IIoT, an interdependent network model is built from an information-service coupling perspective. On this basis, a realistic cascade failure model is designed by taking into account the routing-driven characteristic of the information network and the selective load-distribution characteristic of the service network. The rationality of the proposed model has been verified through extensive experiments, and some meaningful findings have been obtained: (1) cascade failures caused by node removal from the information network are more damaging to IIoT than node removal from the service network; (2) isolated failures are the main cause of the performance degradation of the information network in cascade failures; (3) interdependent failures are the main cause of the performance degradation of the service network in cascade failures.
